History
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is a symbol of regional collaboration and innovation. In 1939, the North Carolina General Assembly chartered the Raleigh-Durham Aeronautical Authority, compelling Wake and Durham counties and the cities of Durham and Raleigh to work together to establish an airport to serve the region.
During World War II, the airport, still under construction, was commandeered by the federal government for wartime use. Following the end of the war in 1945, the Aeronautical Authority was renamed the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. In 1946, 1,223 acres of land used by the federal government were returned to the four local governments, solidifying the foundation for the development of Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
Governance
The Airport Authority is a local government agency governed by an eight-member Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board. Two representatives are appointed to the board by each of our four owner jurisdictions:

City of Raleigh
Durham County
Wake County
The Airport Authority Board is authorized to act in an administrative capacity, overseeing the establishment, construction, management and regulation of the airport.
