Protecting the airspace around Raleigh-Durham International Airport is essential to the safe operation of arriving and departing aircraft.
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority administers the RDU Height Zoning Ordinance, which establishes height restrictions for property and structures surrounding the airport. Depending on the location and height of your project, you may need approval from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Airport Authority before construction begins.
Does Your Project Require Approval?
Height zoning requirements apply to permanent and temporary structures, as well as certain natural features.
Examples include buildings, signs, communication and radio towers, construction cranes and equipment, utility structures and trees.
Use the FAA Pre-Screening Tool to determine whether your proposed project requires FAA review. If your project is located within the RDU Height Zoning area, you may also need an RDU Airport Height Zoning Permit.

If your project requires review, complete the appropriate FAA and Airport Authority applications before construction begins.
Height Zoning Variances
If a proposed structure exceeds the allowable height limits established by the ordinance, applicants may request a variance from the RDU Airport Height Zoning Board of Appeals.
