Wildlife management is an important part of maintaining a safe operating environment at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority works with local, state and federal partners to reduce wildlife hazards on and around airport property, helping protect aircraft, passengers and airport operations.

RDU uses a proactive, science-based approach to discourage wildlife from gathering in areas where it could pose a risk to arriving and departing aircraft.

Wildlife Management Practices

RDU's wildlife management program includes:

• Maintaining airfield grass at heights recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to discourage birds from congregating.

• Inspecting and maintaining the airport perimeter fence to help prevent wildlife from accessing the airfield.

• Coordinating with the USDA to safely relocate geese when necessary.

• Covering ponds on airport property with materials that discourage birds from gathering.

• Monitoring airport property for signs of wildlife activity and responding as needed.

• Working with local university and wildlife experts to identify and relocate protected or endangered species when appropriate.

• Selecting landscaping, including non-fruit-bearing trees, that is less attractive to birds and other wildlife.
