Located near the Air Traffic Control Tower, Observation Park offers views of RDU’s 10,000-foot runway and opportunities to listen to live communications between pilots and air traffic controllers.

A favorite destination for aviation enthusiasts, families and visitors of all ages, the park provides a front row seat to airport operations in a comfortable outdoor setting.

The Observation Park is open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset.

Plane Spotting at RDU

Plane spotting is the hobby of observing, tracking and photographing aircraft. When done safely and responsibly, it offers a unique way to experience daily airport operations.

RDU welcomes plane spotters and authorizes spotting activities in two public locations:

  • Observation Park during operating hours

  • The top level of the ParkRDU Central garage between Terminals 1 and 2

Visitors who plan to spot planes from the ParkRDU Central garage must submit a request form at least 48 hours before arriving. Approval is not required for Observation Park, though advance notification is appreciated.
