Safety is foundational to everything we do at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is committed to providing a safe environment for employees, tenant business partners, travelers and visitors.
The Airport Authority operates under a Safety Management System (SMS), a proactive, organization-wide approach to identifying hazards, managing risk and continuously improving safety performance.
What Is a Safety Management System?
A Safety Management System (SMS) is a structured approach to managing safety that emphasizes prevention, accountability and continuous improvement. Rather than responding only after an incident occurs, an SMS helps identify hazards and risks early so they can be evaluated and addressed before they become larger issues.
RDU's Safety Management System supports safe airport operations by encouraging reporting, analyzing trends and fostering shared responsibility across the airport community. Everyone who works at or operates at RDU plays a role in maintaining a safe airport.
RDU Safety Policy
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority's Safety Policy Statement outlines the organization's commitment to maintaining a strong safety culture and continuously improving safety performance across the airport.
Why Safety Management Matters
RDU's Safety Management System does not replace existing regulations, oversight or operating procedures. Instead, it provides a common framework that helps the Airport Authority and airport partners work together to identify hazards, manage risk and strengthen safety performance.
Safety is a shared responsibility. Through the Safety Management System, everyone at RDU has a role in helping create and maintain a safe operating environment.
